Acme stores in northern Delaware were spared the axe as owner SuperValu announced it will close 60 stores around the county in an effort to improve  weak financial results.

Closings include stores in the company’s Save-A-Lot operation that has been  a growing part of the company’s business. Save-A-Lot has several stores in Delaware that are not affected by the decision.

The Philadelphia Inquirer said stores in Morrisville and Sharon Hill, Pa. And Glassboro, N.J. Stores will close by early December. Many of the closings came from the company’s Albertson’s  operation in the western U.S. Albertson’s owned the Acme operation before its assets were purchased by Super Valu.

Acme, under SuperValu and previous owners, has been closing stores over the years, often on the edge of its territory which  runs from New Jersey to Maryland. It has also not been aggressive in opening new stores in fast-growing areas or communities that have seen other grocers close their doors.

A few Delaware stores have been rumored as candidates for closing. However, Acme is still believed to have the largest market share in northern Delaware.
