Wilmington gets high, low rankings from Parenting Magazine

Parenting Magazine has ranked Wilmington as the nation’s most dangerous city. It came during the same year that the city ranked in the upper half in a listing of the nation’s best cities for families. That ranking failed to draw much attention.

The ranking seems certain to fuel  controversy over crime and the reasons behind the city’s high murder rate as the pivotal primary election approaches.

Such surveys can come to a number of conclusions when it comes to the city of Wilmington, which has a number of zip codes around it that are sometimes used in rankings. The Wilmington metro area is also not a ripe area for rankings, based off Census  figures,  since it is lumped in with Philadelphia, its suburbs and Cecil County, Md.

It was also unclear how the city could rank so low in one category and still rank high in overall quality of life.

Parenting has  circulation of more than 2 million and is owned by Time Inc.

  1. It would be really helpful if Parenting Magazine would add a grid explaining how they came up with the numbers and showing the stats for each city.

That way, we could see why they think all 10 cities on their list have higher crime rates than Detroit and could see if any of their numbers were wrong.
