Newark Police are investigating a hit and run crash that claimed the life of an elderly  pedestrian on Monday night near the Newark Free Library.

The victim was identified as Helen Yang, 76,  of the 300 block of East Main Street in Newark.

At 8:38 p.m., police were called to Library Avenue (Del. Route 72)  just south of Ogletown Road.

Preliminary information indicated a female pedestrian was crossing Library Avenue westbound from College Square Shopping Center in front of the library when she was struck by an unknown southbound vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop.

Police are still searching for the vehicle,  possibly a black 1998-2002 four door Honda Accord. The  vehicle may have front end or right side damage, perhaps in the area of the  right passenger mirror.
