The quaint  custom of having state market presidents for big banks is fading away, with executives taking on larger market areas.

Philadelphia Business Journal reported that Hugh Long, the highly visible president for Wells Fargo’s Pennsylvania and Delaware market will head business banking for the company.

Long had a similar post with Wells’ predecessor Wachovia and was known for pushing for a unified Delaware Valley economic development strategy as chairman of Select Greater Philadelphia.

With long’s departure, Wells will fold Pennsylvania and Delaware into a multi-state region that includes New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the Business Journal reported.

There are still a couple of Delaware market presidents still around at Bank of America and PNC, although they have other responsibilities as well as the post.

Wells has maintained a relatively low profile in Delaware, since converting Wachovia branches to its name.
